In a hundred years, Auschwitz would form its own genre and become the most successfully marketed product in the history of the world, a name as well known globally as Coca Cola, taking all media under its encompassing umbrella. The camps were the obvious ultimate enclosed world, the desired image of world television, beamed by satellite into each city, town and village, ideal for community soap operas (a story of everyday life on the edge of life), of science fiction time travel (travel back through your life and end it in Auschwitz). In this televised scenario the dog boys loomed large as Heathcliff doomed lovers, the spice of sexy bodice rippers which thrilled millions of women.

Spicebush swallowtail caterpillars, as their name implies, feed on spicebush leaves and also on sassafras tree leaves, whereas red spotted purple caterpillars prefer the leaves of black oak, black cherry, poplar and aspen. Both have caterpillars that resemble bird droppings. Those of the red spotted purples are grotesquely horned; those of the spicebush swallowtail only look like bird droppings in their first three instars.
Since we don often get to see them for long, we watched the pair with much excitement and within minutes, a darker sub adult joined them. Some years it’s mild while others roar in like the Siberian Express that has blanketed our northerly neighbors in snow and ice. And while that train has yet to roll into the Ozarks, we’ve had our fair share of temperatures in the teens already.
